  8. What is MRN?  Mrn is My Read News (MRN) program.  This program is designed
  9. to be used to read the News Articles found on the NetNews/CD.  What is
  10. a NetNews/CD?  This is a CDROM that contains about 2 weeks worth of UseNet
  11. News feed.  This series of CDROMs were originally produced by Sterling
  12. Software.  April 1993 the service was turned over to CD Publishing
  13. Corporation.

  15. This program was written to provide an easier way to selectively read
  16. articles found on the NetNews/CD.  Mrn provides a trn/rn "like" interface
  17. to selecting articles found in the groups archived on the CD.  This program
  18. was written in about 2 evenings.  It seems to work just fine for me, I hope
  19. it works well enough for you.  It is a very small program and does only
  20. what I needed it to do.  Remember it is free.  If you have constructive
  21. comments or bugs to report please contact me.  If you know of any other
  22. programs that do a better job at reading these cdroms than mine, please
  23. let me know because I did not find any programs at all when I looked.

  26. Mrn uses a text viewer like more/most/less,etc. to display each article
  27. you chose to read.

  29. This archive contains only three files:
  30.    mrn    - the CLI ONLY executable.
  31.    mrn.cf - the configuration file for mrn.
  32.    readme - the file you are now reading.
  33.  
  34. The mrn.cf file contains configuration information required by mrn.
  35. You should find three entries in mrn.cf.  They are the following:
  36. CDROM_PATH=cd0:spool
  37. NUM_LINES=20
  38. VIEWER=SYS:utilities/more
  39.  
  40. CDROM_PATH should be set to the cdrom device name plus the directory name
  41. "spool".
  42.  
  43. NUM_LINES should be set to the number of lines in your open CLI window.
  44.  
  45. VIEWER should be set to the full path of your text viewer.
  46.  
  47. The mrn.cf can be placed in the same directory as the executable or in S:.
  48.  
  49. To run mrn, open a CLI window and type the following at the CLI prompt:
  50.      mrn NewsDirectory
  51.          where NewsDirectory is the News group directory which contains
  52.          the articles you wish to read.

  54. For Example:
  55.      mrn alt/fan/davebar      this would present you with a list of articles
  56.                               from the Dave Barry newsgroup found under
  57.                               cd0:spool/alt/fan/davebar.

  84. At the ">" prompt you may select/unselect the articles by subject from the
  85. list by entering the alphabetic character in the left most column.  A '+'
  86. sign will appear by selected articles (see example screen above).  You may
  87. unselect an article by re-entering the selection character.  After selecting
  88. one or more of the articles, you may read the selected articles by pressing
  89. the return key.  You favorite text viewer will start up with the selected
  90. article.  When you exit your text viewer, the next selected article will
  91. appear.  When there are no more articles selected to read, the list of
  92. articles will be updated to contain only articles you have not read during
  93. this instance of the mrn program.  If you wish to Quit the program, type
  94. a 'Q' (uppercase Q).  The idea is to make all of your article selections,
  95. then press return and read them.

  100. no modifications are made to the executable and this document. A nominal
  101. fee may be asked to cover distribution costs.

  106. No responsibilities are taken for damaged equipment, lost data, Amigas
  107. or any other components or data involved while using Mrn.
